Database management is a system to manage information that is essential to the company’s business operations. It includes data storage, distributing it to users and application programs making changes as needed as well as monitoring changes to the data and preventing it from getting damaged by unexpected failure. It is a part of a company’s informational infrastructure that supports decision-making, corporate growth and compliance with laws like the GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act.
In the 1960s, Charles Bachman and IBM among others came up with the first database systems. They developed into information management systems (IMS) which allowed huge amounts of data to be stored and retrieved for a range of purposes. From calculating inventory, to supporting complex financial accounting functions as well as human resource functions.
A database consists of a set of tables that arrange data according to a certain arrangement, like one-to-many relationships. It also makes it simpler to update data by avoiding the need to update several databases.
Most DBMSs can support multiple types of databases through different levels of external and internal organization. The internal level concerns cost, scalability, as well as other operational issues like the physical layout of the database. The external level is the representation of the database on user interfaces and applications. It can include a combination of various external views (based on different data models) and may include virtual tables which are generated from data that is generic to enhance performance.
